The Ex-Fater Towers
Pescara
Italy, 2019
The project plans to use 3D laser-scanning technology to scan the area. Using this technology, it is possible to digitally capture the positioning and geomorphology of the terrain prior to construction. Laser scanning technology is much more valuable than photographic mapping, as it reproduces the topology of the area with extreme accuracy in 3D. In the project plan, this kind of technology would be used in conjunction with drone survey techniques to manage the points and the orthophotos generated to further enhance the precision of the measurements and volumes taken.
Our Design Development incorporated BIM principles. BIM is a methodological revolution aimed at obtaining a dynamic and fluid workflow between the various disciplines (architectural, structural, and plant engineering) during the entirety of the design process. Our proposed design of the Ex Fater Towers consists of a single BIM model in Revit divided into architectural and structural components. This allows for time optimization and helps avoid possible interference between the elements. Another important aspect of BIM is software interoperability. Three different programs were used in the creation of our Design Development: Midas Gen for FEM modeling, Revit Structure for general carpentry, and Tekla Structures for the construction details of the reinforcements. We were able to achieve interoperability between these using a special plugin in Midas Gen that can import and export FEM models in Revit. We also used the standard IFC format, which can transform Revit models in a Tekla format to define the details of the reinforcement.
The architectural design images were created in collaboration with SAUD Studio Architettura Urbanistica Design.
